Surprising Benefits of Getting Angry

Many people often consider anger a negative emotion. However, unless it’s fueled by violence or aggression, it benefits from becoming angry every once in a while.

Here are some surprising upsides to being angry:

  1. Anger means you understand your value.

Many people who believe they have been slighted or disrespected may feel negative emotions towards that person. However, on a positive note, it also denotes that the person feeling these angry emotions understands that they deserve better. Hence, they are so enraged at the unfair treatment displayed by others.

  1. Anger can be motivational.

There are many naysayers in the world. Sometimes, even our loved ones aren’t as encouraging as we hoped for them to be. While negative emotions can fester from this lack of support, it can also serve as a motivational factor to prove them wrong.

  1. Anger is a way of survival.

Humans are social creatures that rely on both logic and emotions. While reason helps solve problems, feelings also guide us, especially during socialization. When a person is angry, this could be considered a defense mechanism against what they perceive as a threat. Anger can also serve as a warning signal for the offending party to back off.

  1. Anger lets out stress.

Internalizing your emotions, in the long run, is never a good idea. While it’s also equally harmful to project your anger into violence, there are ways how you can channel it constructively. Some examples include taking up sports, having creative outlets, or just screaming into your pillow.

Anger is a misunderstood emotion. When not managed, it can lead to violence and aggression. On the other hand, if it’s too contained, it may manifest into other forms of unhealthy behaviors. By understanding anger as an emotion that needs to be controlled within reason, we can use it to our advantage without harming anyone.
