Identifying and Addressing the Root Causes of Depression

The hardest battles are usually hidden from the naked eye. For example, battling depression. Fortunately, we’re giving more importance to addressing it now.

Before addressing depression, it’s important to know its various roots. This is essential so that we can properly approach, intervene, and resolve it if we find ourselves facing depression. Here are a few of the most common root causes of depression.

Hormonal Imbalance

Scientifically speaking, the body has four happy hormones that work together to regulate a person’s emotional well-being namely; dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. Briefly explained, dopamine provides us with that feel-good feeling, serotonin promotes calmness and is the antidepressant of the body, endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers, and oxytocin promotes the feeling of empathy. Imbalances in the hormones are identified as one of the root causes of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, and many more. This is because one shortcoming of one of the four happy hormones has a drastic effect already.

Unfortunate or Stressful Life Events

Life isn’t filled with great days; and not everyone is equipped to cope with unfortunate events such as death, failure, unemployment, or simply experiencing negative emotions. Of course, with negative emotions comes various ways people cope, and some of them are unhealthy ones. These can range from isolation, detachment, and in worst-case scenarios, having suicidal tendencies which can lead to death.

Genetics

Contrary to myths that depression isn’t genetic, a lot of studies show that it is. However, having a family history with members who have depression won’t 100% guarantee that you’ll experience it too. There are other factors that come into play such as life events, emotional intelligence, and childhood upbringing.

Addressing the Root Causes of Depression

Now that we’ve identified two of the many other root causes of depression, here are the various ways to address or alleviate it:

  • Talk to a healthcare provider for professional help and intervention
  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms that will help you deal with unpleasant situations and people Have a support group who can assist through the healing or recovery journey
  • Consider psychotherapy
  • Practice sleeping and eating right

Mental health will always be important, and being there for those who need it is a very satisfying feeling indeed. However, it is important that recovery starts for them, and that medical intervention is needed from time to time. Hopefully, more people will come to realize that reaching out for help during depression isn’t something that they shouldn’t be ashamed of.
