How to Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude daily can make a portion of our lives easier. In a world filled with deadlines and personal problems, learning how to count our blessings can be a godsend. Here are ways to practice gratitude.

First, what is gratitude?

Gratitude is the appreciation of what we receive, regardless of whether it’s material or immaterial. When we are grateful, we acknowledge the goodness in our lives and the source of that goodness.

This process of practicing gratitude helps us connect to something larger than our individual selves—whether it’s other people, the universe, or even a higher being.

  • Writing a letter or email of appreciation to your boss;
  • Scribbling “thank you” messages on post-it notes for your loved ones after making their lunch;
  • Thanking your barista or waitress for bringing your morning coffee or lunch; and

The soft pillows of your bed? The aroma of your favorite beverage? Whatever it is, allow yourself to appreciate its effect and gently let it wash over you. After which, remember to take a deep breath and exhale.

One way for religious people to show gratitude is through prayer. During this step, acknowledge the blessings in your life and express your heartfelt appreciation. Be grateful for the little things and challenges, as the latter will help you get stronger.
