Habits that Worsen Your Depression

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a severe illness with debilitating effects. One of the reasons why people cope takes a long time is because of the never-ending cycle it brings to people. From hopelessness to suffering and maybe a smidgen of hope before returning to distress again—many find the condition incredibly draining because it seems like there is no way out.

To start, here are some habits that make your depression worse:

  1. Lack of physical activity.

While taking a break may seem like a good idea, it can be debilitating in the long run.   1. Bad sleeping habits.

Depression puts you in two categories: you sleep too much or too little. Regardless of your type, a bad sleeping habit can eventually affect your brain.

This is because sleep is essential for repairing the body at a cellular level. When we have little rest or sleep too much, we become susceptible to issues like increased anxiety, mood swings, and increased levels of stress.

  1. Social withdrawal.

Withdrawing ourselves from family and friends leaves us vulnerable and exposed to our negative thoughts. Lack of social support makes us more susceptible to stress, worsening feelings of loneliness and isolation we may already have. It also prevents us from seeking help and can even impact our lives.

  1. Poor diet quality.

Strangely enough, even the quality of our foods plays an essential role in regulating our moods. Studies show diets high in processed sugars, refined grains, and alcohol worsens depression and anxiety.

People with depression may seek food as a source of comfort. More often than not, they’ll choose foods rich in sugar and fat. However, on the other spectrum, they may even have a sudden loss of appetite—making them susceptible to developing eating disorders.

  1. Constant rumination.

Rumination refers to the constant thinking and dwelling of negative thoughts and feelings. Thoughts like, “I am worthless,” “I do not deserve help,” and the like worsen feelings of depression because individuals believe and internalize them. Constantly thinking of one’s worthlessness also prevents them from seeking help, hindering them from becoming better and seeking treatment.

These habits worsen depression because they exacerbate negative thoughts and feelings. When we become conscious of these habits, we can progress to a brighter and more positive space. That is why most care plans for depression and the like include a total lifestyle change, including careful monitoring of sleep, diet, exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
