Dealing with the Aftermath of a Murdered Loved One

As humans, we are all aware that life is temporary and that death is inevitable. However, it is incredibly terrifying to have to deal with the sad truth: that not everyone dies naturally and that murder could play a part in it.

Murder is considered one of the vilest crimes that human beings commit—endangering the victim and their loved ones. Because of the complex issues surrounding the events, it is essential to understand what murder is.

Murder, by most laws, is unlawfully killing a person with malice aforethought. Malice aforethought means the person committing the crime has the intention to kill. This distinction separates the term from manslaughter and homicide while ensuring the justice system provides adequate consequences.

Whatever the case, family members and significant others may find the news shocking. As they go through the stages of grief, they may even encounter difficulties that could affect their mental psyche altogether. Here are ways to deal with the tragedy:

  1. Allow yourself to feel.
    Shock, anger, rage, pain, etc., are all normal reactions. When a loved one dies of murder, there is no doubt that it has impacted the essential people in their life. Allowing yourself to feel your grief helps you to deal with the situation more honestly. Remember to avoid letting your emotions take over your sense of reason.

  2. Seek familial or friendly support.
    Many people often isolate themselves from the situation, thinking they should cope with the problem alone. Unfortunately, this exacerbates the problem, making you more prone to anguish and pain. To remedy this, seek out other family members to avoid grieving alone.

  3. Seek professional help.
    While connecting with others is essential, we can still benefit from grief counselors and therapists that offer effective coping strategies.

Grief is a powerful emotion that needs to be dealt with delicately. When we are not careful with it, we become susceptible to risks that could affect us psychologically. Avoid such risks by asking for help. Good luck.
